In rough choppy water a paddle sweeping across the top of the water will hit gaps of air as the troughs of waves pass by. The stable water is further down below the surface, so holding the paddle vertically provides enough purchase to recover. A practical roll that is somewhat difficult to master. No points if the paddle goes horizontal.
